What Is Hip Bursitis?
The bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that sits between muscles, tendons and bones. Its role is simple but important — it reduces friction and allows smooth movement.
When the bursa becomes inflamed or thickened, it enlarges and creates increased rubbing between surrounding muscles and tendons. This painful condition is known as bursitis.
Hip bursitis (often called trochanteric bursitis) is one of the most common forms and can significantly impact walking, sleeping, and daily comfort.
It is also more common in women than men and may be influenced by hormonal changes such as menopause or pregnancy.
Why Does Hip Bursitis Occur?
Overuse or Inappropriate Training
Repetitive movements such as running, long-distance walking, or sudden increases in activity can place abnormal stress on the hip bursa.
Changes in Biomechanics
Postural changes, muscle imbalance, joint restriction, or altered walking patterns can increase pressure on the outer hip.
Hormonal Changes
Pregnancy and menopause can influence joint stability and tissue sensitivity, increasing the risk of inflammation.
Joint Restriction
Restricted movement in the hip or pelvis can overload the bursa and surrounding tissues.
At our Geelong clinic, identifying the underlying cause is just as important as relieving the pain.
